Big Day
Sooo, it’s my birthday today. Yippee! I’m giving myself the day off, partly because I occasionally like to be a nice boss to myself, and partly to deal with the half-horrifying, half-marvellous fact that my pic is on the front cover of the Friday section of the Mail & Guardian newspaper. Yikes, ulp, gosh, etc.
Of course, I’m thrilled to bits with the article, but wasn’t brave enough to get the paper before 10:00, steeling myself with a bike ride, two coffees and an eggy breakfast first. It’s a lovely article though, and I’m quite overwhelmed by the whole thing. Read it here, if you like.
Ok, now next on the birthday schedule: turn the computer off, then tootle down the road for a haircut. I reckon I need one to accommodate my newly-swollen head!
Congractulations, Heather! As a fellow South African I am very proud of your achievements and international recognition. The fact that you achieved success through the internet is great, but I think good design will find a way to recognition/success whichever way it can.(Oh, and I like your red shoes on the cover photo!)

Hi Heather – just read the article! Well done, although i don't entirely agree with you. In my opinion you are an artist (in a ddition to being a kick-ass illustrator) and traditional african art has always been 'attractive, decorative and functional'- so i think i would call you a modern africa artist. but who needs labels anyway, right? I can see that you truly LOVE what you do whether its art or not – HAPPY BIRFDAY!!! ilze wolff

Happy Birthday and congratulations on the article! On the artist/crafter/illustrator thing – I prefer the designation "creator". To me the important thing is to create something new and different. Some artists and crafters and illustrators are not creators. But if you are a creator, well, then it doesn't matter if other people call you an artist/crafter/illustrator.
