Rough Cuts

It’s a big day today, as we have our press launch of the Rough Cuts fabric collection this evening.

We’re billing Rough Cuts as  “a collection inspired by Scandinavian style, but perfectly at home in Africa”. This is because, while I designed it in my usual clean, simple style, when I teamed it up with Binky Newman’s woven vessels (see my post here), I was blown away at what a perfect match they made. As I’m a fourth generation South African, so of course my roots are on this continent, but I must say,it’s nice to see them showing :)

PS: One thing I’m so thrilled about the launch tonight is that it is such a Bree Street affair: we’ll be 100m from the Skinny laMinx shop, in the Rivets and Rockets workshop at 152 Bree St, with catering by Cafe Frank, barely a hop away. Love me some good neighbours!

And in that vein, the very dear Robert Sherwood must be mentioned, for his kindness at insisting that I put some Rough Cuts cushions in his beautiful shop tonight, as people will see them on the way to the launch. So nice!

Pincushions – a potted history

My Pincushion print was initially inspired by the Pincushion protea (Leucospermum Cordifolium) flower, and started out years ago as a papercut. I started screenprinting it onto table runners and napkins, and then included it as part of the Flower Dreams collection launched last year, in  five fynbos-inspired colours.

And now, finally, I’m listing my Pincushion print as cushion covers too.

New prints – more pics

I’ve taken heaps of pics of my new geometric prints, teamed up with baskets & beads from Binky Newman’s Design Afrika showroom. I used most of these pics in our new products catalogue, but reckon they can get another showing on the blog:

Rough Diamond, in Inkspot (above) and also in Lollipop & Sunny Sky below.

Woodpile, in Pollen (above), and also in Smudge & Spruce below.

Pebble, in Lollipop (above), and also in Smudge & Pollen below

All these cushions are available for sale in US$ here, and in ZAR here.

New stuff

Finally! I’ve slipped in a couple of sneak peeks into Instagram, but on the whole have been VERY discreet, in order to do a GIANT reveal with LOTS of new things. So here goes: Lookee!

Voila, the start of a brand new geometrics collection called Rough Cuts, so far comprising prints called Pebble, Woodpile and Rough Diamond.

Production is afoot most furiously on this side, so while I don’t have any products available online quite yet, if you sign up for the newsletter and stay close to your smartphone, you’ll be the first to know.

In the meantime, here’s smattering of things we’re making, and there’s lots, lots more in the online catalogue too.

Hooray! New things! I love these prints. They make me very happy :)

Zafu

It’s Making Friday, but I’ve got a nasty chesty bug and am not up to much today. Also, I had a great Making Wednesday this week, so I think I’m allowed today off. Just this once! But before I bugger off home to feel sorry for myself (and probably tweet about it), I did want to tell you a bit more about one of the things I made in last week’s bumper edition of Making Friday.

This is a round floor cushion, also known as a Zafu, and the idea is that is props up your bum while you sit in meditation. A zafu is generally stuffed with kapok, but what I love about my zafu is that it is stuffed with fabric offcuts, and this has made a substantial dent in the endless accumulation of fabric offcuts I seem to generate.

There’s a zip smartly concealed in one of the pleats, which means that if you have been doing some heavy meditation, causing the zafu stuffing to become compressed, it’s super easy to add more stuffing.

Let me know if you’d like to order a zafu. They’re fun to make (and good for my karma, I’m sure), but as they’re pretty heavy, I think they’re probably only viable for Cape Town customers.

Heading in a Pink direction

Pink. It’s a colour I don’t really do it at all, and never have. Possibly, it’s having been the only girl with three brothers that innoculated me to its feminine joys early on, but I must admit that lately, pink teamed with greys and blacks  keeps catching my eye, and if I’m not careful, I might start to find myself convinced.

And, of course, the clincher might be spotting my Flower Fields cushion in Rosy making a pink POP! in the black/white/grey living room makeover of one of my long-time fave bloggers, Victoria of SFgirlbybay (more pics of her beautiful home here).

PS: I’ve started working on a fun pink and black project in my studio and hope to have a hardworking Making Friday tomorrow, and I’ll be able to share the results soon.

Flower Fields

Maybe I shouldn’t point it out, as I don’t know if anyone’s actually noticed, but so far every single one of my fabrics so far has been printed in just a single colour. However, that’s all changed now, with my brand new design called Flower Fields.

It’s got two (count them, TWO!) colours in each print. It’s a breakthrough moment! We’re all turning cartwheels at Skinny laMinx!

Flower Fields in (L-R): Goldenrod, Penny Black, Rosy

The inspiration for Flower Fields came from a vintage fabric cushion we’ve had at home for years. My design started out as a paper cutout of the same kind of flower shape (see below), which I made ages ago just for fun. Earlier this year, I turned it into a repeat, but never got around to putting it on fabric because I simply couldn’t decide which colours it should be printed in. It was only when I decided to use two colours that suddenly everything fell into place.

Now Flower Fields is available for sale online as cushions (here in US$, and here in ZAR)…

… and Flower Fields is also available in upholstery lengths. I covered our Ercol daybed at home in the Penny Black colourway, and it looks so fab! Email me for fabric orders and queries.
