Making Friday last week

I’m so happy that it seems my Making Fridays are becoming a part of my weeks again, and last Friday was a fab one, even if the things I was Making were very much shop-related. I got out my ceramics transfers and box of blank mugs and made a whole heap of mugs.

I picked them up from firing today, and they turned out beautifully!

I’d love to have them for sale in my Etsy shop, but the shipping costs are totally insane, so I’ve decided to keep them in my shop at 201 Bree St in Cape Town only. There are very limited quantities of each design, so if you want one, make it snappy! More pics on Facebook.

Valentine’s Day is coming, and for once I’m ready for it (retail-wise, that is)! I worked hard on my shop window over the weekend with a Valentine’s message for just about everyone out there:

Teaching at Squam!

“Squam is a lake, a gathering, a community”… and later this year, I’m going to be part of it! Yup, crafty folks, I’m going to Squam!!

I can hardly believe it’s true, but come September this year, I’ll be heading off for New Hampshire to teach at the Fall Squam Art Workshop. I’ll be teaching a couple of full day courses in very simple screenprinting, using the most basic of tools. I’ll be teaching alongside a wonderful lineof of super-talented people, with a lot of awesome to share.

The advent of Pinterest has introduced an unprecedented deluge of fashion and style images into my life, and it’s undoubtedly influencing the way I dress and style my look. And I’m not alone in this. I was at a rather nice and rather hip bar last week, and found myself identifying ‘Pinterest hair’ on the heads of the cool girls. So I made this drawing:

Happy Year of the Dragon

I’m really not a horoscope or zodiac person at all, so am not sure what the implications are, but I do know that today’s the Chinese New Year, and that it’s the Year of the Dragon. Japanese stationery company Winged Wheel used my dragon papercut one one of their letterpressed New Year’s cards, and I love the way they turned out.

By the way, if you’re at the New York Gift Fair at the Javits Centre in early February, don’t forget to seek out the Winged Wheel booth (Booth #1770), to say ‘hi!’ to Rumi, who will be looking out for friendly faces

Pink is a Homophone

I believe it is called a homophone - a word that, while spelled and sounding the same, has a number of unrelated meanings. It just occurred to me on Wednesday while cutting up fabric scraps in my never-ending attempt to put them to good use, that “pink” is a homophone. It’s not only a colour, currently infecting my sensibilities (and, it seems, my Making Fridays), but also a verb, meaning to cut zig-zag edges with a special pair of scissors called pinking shears.

My shears did a lot of pinking today, turning long scraps into pretty fabric ribbons, some of which are now available for sale in my Etsy shop. The price? Well, it’s a snip!

Potential in a Blackjack

I know full well that Blackjacks are not our friends, and can really ruin a perfectly good pair of tights, but this morning was the first time I’ve seen them on the plant (rather than on my socks), and you have to admit that looking like this, they can almost be forgiven.

Gasp! Just had a thought: Brides-to-be, I bet Blackjacks have never been done as wedding flowers before. They wouldn’t cost a cent, and your guests would have something to take home with them too (on their socks). Eh? I’m a genius, me.

Hanging gardens

The hanging succulent garden that I made for my old studio continues to bring a lot of new visitors to my blog, and so I’d like to tell you about a hanging gardens business in Cape Town, in the hopes of bringing in lots of interest to her lovely work too.

In one corner of my shop, I have a beautiful hanging Delicious Monster, made by Opus Studio. This little business is just about to open its first studio premises at the brand new Foundry on Albert Road in Woodstock, and is well worth a visit.
