Interview: MWEB’s entrepreneurship series
13 Mar 2013
MWEB is doing a series about South African entrepreneurs. If you have 15 minutes to spare and promise not to catalogue my nervous tics and annoying gestures, take a look at my interview below.
Heather that was great and really inspiring for a small business owner who’s a bit long in the tooth and sometimes feels a wee bit tired! i thought his questions were really pertinent and your answers honest and encouraging… I especially agree with the importance of showing that the company is run by people and isn’t some great corporate machine. Lot’s of what you spoke about really resonates with me and it’s great to listen and relate..it’s kind of re invigorating. And yes the Internet is a wonderful thing especially the community that comes along with it .Thanks so much,Silkie
Thanks so much for your lovely comment, Silkie. Also, I’m so pleased to have discovered your beautiful stationery designs, as well as your lovely blog. Thanks for that, too.
x Heather
Really lovely! It’s such great insight and quite inspiring to listen of where you started and the journey to where you are now.
I’m just curious, I’m interested to learn how to do screen printing as an hobby but am clueless and would like to know if you can point me in the right direction?
Hi Nielfa. Thanks for the kind words. Screenprinting isn’t very difficult. You’ll probably find tutorials online, or otherwise you could get a book like Laurie Wisbruns ‘Mastering the art of fabric printing and design’. Best of luck, h
Heather, awesome interview! My biggest surprise? Hearing your voice! Since I didn’t end up meeting up with you in sf the first time you were there, I haven’t had a chance to hear your voice. One certainly imagines what a person sounds like in real life versus a blog. But it’s never quite how you imagine it to be. Truly a pleasure to watch. I appreciate that I’ve been part of your audience for quite a number of years. I honestly don’t remember how I even stumbled onto your blog. But it’s truly amazing how the online design community has changed so much. I remember being in college and sewing away at the basement in the wee late hours and eating up on the design blogs. Hoping someday I’d open my own store. I never made a go of it but still enjoy being a part of your success.
I plan on making it down to South Africa next year. Will definitely be stopping by your store.
What a great story & generous of you to share – thank you! It is really nice to be able to experience true generous warm souls that we can connect with through this mad digital age – love it! x
Hi Heather, thank you for sharing this video, it must be very odd to have yourself out there on you tube (I’ve only done it once and promptly pressed delete!). You come across so naturally and honestly and as a newbie business owner I learned a lot from your conversation.
Thanks so much watching, and for the kind comments, Micala. I majored in drama at University, so I suppose I must like the sound of my own voice to some degree 🙂
