Best Things: Local lamps and stands
It’s not that easy to find a great lampstand or lightfitting when you need one, so I’ve been putting together a collection of my favourites… and ALL of them are designed and made in South Africa.
Woltemade Studio makes this large and sculptural A Lamp , which is simultaneously impressive and discreet. Their beautiful Vonk Glass lights (below) come in both hanging and wall versions.
The Moon Light from MOS Products in Johannesburg is just a most delightful object, isn’t it? I love the colours, but they’re pretty customisable too.
As part of their Clay Collection, Cape Town interiors company Bofred have the Arch Table Lamp (below left) designed by ceramicist Jennifer de Charmoy, as well as the Eclipse wall sconce, designed in collaboration with Klomp Ceramics.
The Metro light from Joburg duo Dokter and Misses (above) is a great mix of contemporary and classic, whereas their Moonjelly 2.0 (below) – a collection of 27 standing and hanging lights that resulted from a week-long visit to the Ngwenya Glass factory in Swaziland – is just totally (fabulously) bonkers.
Our old friends at Vamp Furniture have been expanding their self-made vintage-inspired furniture a lot lately, and I’m glad to see that their Vamp Lamp has been given an chic update in oak & brass. As you can see below, the Vamp Lamp is a perfect match for a Skinny laMinx lampshade!
LIM has been selling their simple, minimal wares just up the road from our apartment for the last 20 years, and they have an astonishing array of floor and table lamps on offer. Pictured below, the Straight Poppy Lamp (left) Straight Arc Lamp.
Minima is the brainchild of architect Jacques Cronje, who makes intricate glowing lamps lasercut from birchply wood. I really love his hanging Fusion lamp, with its strong Scandi vibes.
Egg Designs from Durban has quite a number of lighting options, and I really like their Agogo terracotta collection (below).
And then, in an absolute class of their own, there’s Willowlamp, whose workshop is in our studio building in Salt River, from whence these most astonishing creations emerge. See their website to get more of an idea of the full effect of this amazing company.
The beautiful Nautilus is made by designer Louw Roets. Find it here, along with other designs.
I’ve no doubt there are heaps of amazing local companies I’ve missed out upon. Let me know, and I’ll add an update!
