Meet Threadcount
I’ve been a bit quiet on the blogging front, but that’s because the rest of my life has been 100 miles a minute. Mostly, this is because I’m madly busy preparing for the Design Indaba Expo at the end of this month (yikes!), along with the rest of the Threadcount Collective.
‘Threadcount?’ I hear you ask. ‘What’s that?’ Well, I’ll tell you:
Some time last year, I thought it might be nice if all the local independent fabric designers and producers got to meet each other. Part of the reason was that a large cotton mill in Cape Town had closed all of a sudden, and most of us found ourselves floundering a little, and in need of some support and advice.
So we met, and immediately there was a generosity of spirit that was really amazing. We all shared our contacts, advice, experience and enjoyed echoing each others’ moans about our problems with printers / CMTs / etc etc. Soon enough, we were meeting more often, and the Threadcount Collective was born: a loosely-woven group of independent textile designers and producers who meet to help and support one another. We’re kind of like freelance colleagues, really.
Now, four members of the collective (pictured below) have decided to share a stand at the Design Indaba Expo. Our plan is to showcase the Collective at the Expo, and then steer all interested parties to our hot and happening Pop Up Shop in the BoKaap, where we’ll be selling our gorgeous wares!
L-R: Cara Rosa of Twine; Jane Solomon of Fabricnation; me of Skinny laMinx; Tracy Rushmere of Shine Shine
So if you’re in Cape Town, come and visit us at the Expo, from 26 – 28 Feb. The stand will be gorgeous, of course, but it’s seriously tiny, so a follow-up visit to the Pop Up Shop at 45 Upper Leeuwen St, BoKaap is mandatory. The shop will be running from 26 Feb to 6 March, from 10am – 5pm daily. Keep checking our website for more.
Oh, and please note that our lovely website was whipped up in no time at all by my brilliant brother Duncan from Nook Digital.

good luck for the show, the collective sounds like a great idea – I wish I was on the same side of the world as your pop-up shop, I would love to visit it!

Yeay for collaboration. And I’m so glad you’re keeping the shop open until March 6th. I’m doing Design Indaba too and am happy I’ll be able to visit after. Good luck and see you there!
