I Wish We Had Ikea – new in shop

    16 Jan 2009

Some time last year, after reading about how I feel terribly deprived by the fact that we don’t have IKEA stores in South Africa, someone very kindly sent me the 2009 IKEA catalogue (thanks, Melinda!). I made some drawings from the catalogue (posted about ’em here), and then had the thought it might be fun to put my IKEA wishlist on a tea towel, complete with catalogue prices.

So here it is – I Wish We Had IKEA, printed in grey waterbased ink on 100% cotton hopsack, and now available in my Etsy shop! And that’s not all, folks! I’ve also printed it onto an upholstery weight cotton, and made it up into cushions, also available in my shop.

Have a great weekend, everyone! I’ll be at the Neighbourgoods Market, so see you there.

PS: Many thanks to Design*Sponge, Apartment Therapy SF, Craftzine and Laura Warecki for posting about this so quickly!

Smartypants… I too covet Ikea goods (sigh) Maybe one day we’ll be able to online shop for Ikea goodies? Until then I’m going to keep sending requests (demands) to my sister in the UK!

I love that idea, it’s funny thinking that you’ve handmade limited edition fabrics about an extremely low prices and over mass produced super store. It’s like you’ve subconsciously recorded the comparisons between handcrafted and mass made especially as you’ve featured the prices, but yet you have married them together by their “design”. I like it.

      Hi Heather

Struggling to get hold of you: your email seems to be bouncing. I’m getting failure notices from the heapau@ address.

Nothing urgent, just wanted to touch base.

Interesting to see that your catalogue has prices in US dollars not British Pounds. But then I suppose it is actually a Swedish shop so maybe it ought to be in Kroner?

Hey, I wish we had IKEA!!!

Guess what else? I saw your work at the Heath LA opening! It was so fun to see 2 of my favorite designers come together! Esp since I’ve been a fan of both of you (you and Edith that is) for so long.

Wow, thanks for all the comments, guys! I love what you had to say about the concept, Glueandglitter, and Dojo and rino, you’re right – it would have been great to have prices in Kronar, but I have the US catalogue! I loved the way the catalogue lists all its titles in Swedish, not making concessions for their global audience. Nice to see that kind of national pride!

      Hi Heather,

I was on the IKEA website just yesterday and it seems as if they have stores in every place, including Timbucktoo, The Moon and possibly even Transylvania, yet not in Cape Town? Please send your tea towel to them, our lives will be better for it!

love this so much. i have a love/hate relationship with Ikea. But I’d hate to live somewhere where I couldn’t have access to it when I wanted to.

I love it! I have to get a few of these. I truly admire how you make art out of everyday things.

BTW, I stil havent decided if I’m going to frame or use the tea towels that I bought from Heath Ceramics.
