Cold Comfort
This image by Andrey Avdeenko is of Comfort Town – a neighbourhood in Kyiv that’s been painted bright colours to lift the spirits during cold, dark winters.
I hope it lifts your spirits today, even if it is just to recall that beauty and joy have power, even in the darkest times, and that we all have the capacity to add small moments of beauty and joy to the day, whatever is happening.
When you live, as we do, on a continent rife with injustice and war, choosing to make an Insta post about the situation in the Ukraine begs a very uncomfortable question about why one war gets more attention than another.
That changed this morning, however, when the news came through of South Africa’s abstention from a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Our country knows all about the evils of bullying imperialism, so their cowardly stance on this clearly unjust situation, is an utter disgrace.
