If you’ve been wandering around the BoKaap in Cape Town in the past year, you might have noticed a vibrantly-painted storefront on Rose Street with a big, BIG banana out front. That’s Mami Wata – Africa’s newest surf brand with the hottest style.
The name “Mami Wata” is from West African pidgin English and literally means ‘Mama Water’… or ‘Mother Ocean’, if you prefer, and it’s a terms used from Madagascar to Morocco, Liberia to Mozambique, to describe the African water spirit who appears in the shape of a mermaid.
Co-founder Nick Dutton believes that Africa is the new frontier in terms of design, and importantly for Mami Wata, surf exploration and culture. Surf spots of Africa shape their narrative, and the story is told via an immediatly recognisable brand identity, heavy on the mermaids and bananas, put together by maverick artist/designer Peet Pienaar. As Nick puts it,“It’s original, it’s African, it’s surf and, when you really look at the detail, it’s a bit bonkers.” Oh, and they also make a damn fine cup of coffee
