Who looks for treasure in the same place twice?

    9 Feb 2021

Nobody looks in the same place for treasure twice, right? Well, it depends on how you define ‘treasure’, I guess.

For designers, like me, creative thoughts & fresh ideas are hugely valuable. This is the ‘treasure’ I look for, and I definitely need to look more than once to find it.

    Here’s what I mean:

The pic at the top of this post was my very first Instagram post, from about 5 years ago. It’s not a great photo, but ever since, every time I pass Fortuna apartments on the Sea Point Promenade, my head always turns to look at the building.

And if the shadows are interesting, I take another snap.

I must have looked at the facade of Fortuna at least 25 times, and then one day, I finally stopped and made a sketch of the shadows.

I kept thinking about the sketch, which brought to mind a new idea, which turned into a design. And eventually (after over a year) it ended up as a ceramic vase. And a summer scarf. And a Risograph print too.

Creative thinking is like that. You look at something – even a thing you’ve seen 100 times – and suddenly you can see something new.

So that’s why I keep my eyes out for ‘treasure’ every day. It can be found in the most ordinary things. All I need to do is keep looking.

“It’s not what you look at, it’s what you see.” – Henry Thoreau

If you want to see more treasure every day, check out my list of 9 tips to help you look better (I mean with your eyes. You look great already).

Aaaaw such a great blog post! Even more so because I used to live in the Fortuna building! In that flat directly above the entrance 😍 we used to tell people we lived in Miami. I’ll have to try and get my hands on one of your designs inspired by my previously loved home ❤️

Hey, great to hear from you! And how fab to know that you used to live there. What an awesome location. I hope where you are now is even half as nice 🙂

All the products can be found for sale at https://skinnylaminx.com/promenade-collection/. The vase is packaged very sturdily. Keep an eye on my newsletter for the video I made about kicking a packaged vase down the stairs four times. It’s hilarious!

        All the best!

        Hi Patrick
Ah, that makes us happy to hear that you’re feeling our sunshine up there! When we’re in winter and you’re in summer, you’ll have to send us some rays back down this way.
        Hugs from the South!
        xx Heather
