Mid-March Making Friday
After last week’s great reception to my post explaining Making Friday, I’m under pressure to follow up, aren’t I?
Well, here goes, with a post about using the side effects of the thing you’re making (just for fun) to make something else just for fun. More fun? I’m in.
So, just as I didn’t throw away my linocut shavings before I’d messed around with them (remember my hipsters and the shaggy dog animation?), this time, I’ve been playing with the bits cut away from the papercut I’m working on.
Teasing them out of the pile, I found I really like the shapes! And although I made them, they’re definitely not shapes I might have drawn or cut otherwise, which makes them even more interesting to play with.
They remind me a bit of the shapes made by illustrators like Rex Ray, or Jesse LeDoux, don’t you think?
I liked this last arrangement, so later I added some colour in Photoshop…
… and I reversed it too.
I like them! If you do too, you can download either version as a screen wallpaper for your phone or computer monitor. I already did.

Hi Heather. Amazing job you did, thinking out of the box with your use of the negative shapes. I love this! I dont post replies often, but I follow your blog and find you a great inspiration. Such talent you have, starting with your ability to find the possibilities in the “happy accidents”. You totally inspire me when you pushed the creative bar not once, but three times (at least?!) in creating the final product of this pattern. I might have stopped at discovering the first cool shapes but you kept going. You are awesome 🙂

Hi Marie
Thanks so much for stopping to leave a comment. I really am glad that you enjoyed this post, and must add that although I might not like to admit it, but the fact that I may share my creative process on this blog is sometimes the thing that motivates me to push that creative bar. So in fact, I must thank YOU for reading, and for thus holding me accountable 🙂 It’s all about teamwork!

You wild person! I could see this range on barkcloth. The graphic and calligraphic quality of the first shot is spectacular, too.
It’s always a treat to see where you’ll go next.

Oh yes. I’m wild and crazy, me! 🙂 Thanks so much for the kind comment.

This is so inspiring, I am constantly snipping up pieces of Origami paper and always keep the offcuts because they are such interesting shapes… now I know what I can do with them.
Thanks

Oh, that’s great! I’m sure you’ll come up with something fab.
