    A dog bowl… is a dog bowl

    4 Nov 2010

On a whim, I bought these dogs bowls at a mega hardware store last week. I love the colours, and the shapes are swoopy and cool, and I was convinced I could make them work as funky, slightly edgy home accessories. So I tried them out as fruit bowls, but whatever I tried (bananas, apples, tomatoes…) they just kept on being dogs bowls. And dog bowls with fruit in them isn’t really a look anyone should try rocking.

Any suggestions for what to do with four dog bowls? Getting four dogs is not an option.

Would they work as planters? Maybe you could attach them to cute vintage stands, fill them with rocks and soil and use them as succulent planters at staggered heights?

      Grace 🙂

You can always donate them to a local shelter. They’re always in need of everything 🙂

This totally made me laugh. The first thing that came to mind—as long as the holidays are coming up—is to spray paint them the color of your choice (silver?) and use them as bases for a “forest” of 4 Xmas trees. ???

      or…

Hang them up on a wall with a round cardstock paper cut out (the lovely ones that you do of course) glued to the front. The color of each bowl would show through the cut outs.

      or…

get a dog that is really thirsty all the time! 🙂

I wish we had those in the UK! What fab colours! Especially the mustard and grey. You could put them in the garden, fill them with water for mini bird baths!

Sheesh, everyone’s a lot more creative than me. I just gave up when the fruit bowl idea didn’t work 🙂 xx

Those sorts of things are really good for stopping your ball of wool rolling away when you’re knitting…. also good for holding beads…. and hey! soaking transfers! Or give them to someone with toddlers – kids LOVE eating out of dog bowls. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

Your ideas are so good, I think I may have to get MORE dog bowls so I can put them all into action. Soaking transfers is going to be the first application. Genius!

I’ve been thinking about this for a little bit:

      * use them as little bird’s nest. you could fill it with moss and either buy the styro birds or sew your own. it’s actually really fun to sew some cute birds, they could even represent your family members.

      * cover some really large styrofoams. i’ve seen some good tutorials on twin covered, etc. and glue them into the balls. these could be really cute to just sit out. or maybe even globes of different sizes.

      * clocks. it’s super easy to make a clock. and these could be so cute on a wall all together.

*flip them upside down, cut out pictures (probably black and white) and stick them to the circle. this would make a cute type of collage. better yet, circle mirrors of different sizes.

      * make your own candles. This could be so easy and perfect.

i think my favorite is the clock idea. good luck and let me know what you end up with!

Ok, seriously, I’m feeling like the most uncreative person here. Your ideas, on top of everyone else’s, are brilliant! Can’t wait to tackle those dog bowls with renewed vigour. xx

the ‘use em for kids’ idea ROCKS i dont know why i never thought of that before because I also have a weakness for these bowls – my cat has a bowl for nearly every day of the week. Now my son can too. But i don’t think you need to worry Heather when you make fabric that looks as HOT as the one on the latest design sponge before and after. WOW. my couch is gonna love you XXXXXXX

Love the idea of the cats and your son all chomping out of their animal bowls. Hee hee. Ooh, didn’t see the latest D*S before and after – must check it out. Thanks for your lovely comments. xx

I see it as wall art:) I love the colours.
Or – if you drill a hole for water to drain – they could be great plant pots:)
Or maybe the kitties would like their dinner served in four parts:)

      Are they plastic?

If so, you could drill four holes, thread through some string/yarn and use them as hanging bird seed trays.

I can see why you couldn’t leave them behind!
I think I’d add a nice, thick wooden lid, to upgrade the look a bit. Just have wood with a nice pattern cut to size (glue a slightly smaller circle of thick felt or plywood inside to stop the lid from sliding off). Then sand and oil. Four sweet storage boxes!

you could drill holes through the middle, thread rope or a chain between them, and place them in descending order. it would make a super cute hanging organizer for a studio or kitchen.

When I saw your request, I couldn’t wait to see what everyone else came up with – I thought about drilling a hole through the middle and turning them upside down as hanging light fixtures. They might even look cool stacked as one fixture given how good the colours look together. Planters are good – and could even hang them on the wall in a display with hooks drilled into the center to hang keys (practical) or goofy objects.

Oh my! Everyone has such brilliant ideas! I am thinking REALLY large candles (melted into the bowls) or planters (I am seeing succulents here). Something also makes me want to stack and play a little! Must be the lovely colours. Please keep us posted (with pics) on what you decide to do! (I also LOVE the idea of clocks!)

Can you drill holes in their centers and stack them somehow with a rod through the holes – for what I don’t know tho. A lamp base? A sculpture? Reminds me of fiestaware for doggies.

Could put different doggy treats on each level and take it around, like a dog cocktail party vessel 🙂 Love all these great ideas. xx

I think you have a cat – use the small one for the cat’s food…

or you can take them to your studio and fill each with bits and bobbles – safety pins in the smallest bowl, some pencils/pens in a larger bowl, maybe scissors in a bowl…maybe you can use the largest to hold all your eeps until you are ready for the day to sew them all up to make scrap eeps.

I was thinking you should hang then on the wall..they’d look fun hanging behind a couch – from large to small or small to large or random….

Or mail them to me – I have a dog and 2 cats..haha.

Hmmm – I thought succulents/cacti before I even saw everyone’s comments! They’re beautiful bowls – I’d have got a couple for Fudge if he wasn’t already sorted with boring stainless steel ones! xx

Glad I know your dog’s name is Fudge, otherwise I might think you were suggesting keeping my fudge stash in a dog bowl. Not that appealing… 🙂
