20 Days of HappyThanks #7: Skermunkil

When Marietjie Beeselaar started out as a jeweller, it was in an old barn in the Baviaanskloof in the Eastern Cape, with bats and snakes and the dark dark night for company. There, about 12 years ago, she made her first range of jewellery, all about birds.
I didn’t know her during those wild and woolly days, but when I started selling Skinny laMinx at markets 10 years ago, her beautiful pendants were the things I saved up for, and I’ve continued to be delighted by her varied and enormously creative output of jewellery and ceramics ever since.
These days, you’ll find Marietjie in the Skermunkil in Muizenberg Village, on the southern coast of Cape Town, along with other people creating things, from graphic design to blacksmithing, to making wooden surfboards to pottery. Her life, surrounded by sea and mountains, is filled with natural inspiration, which makes her love what she does… and I hope you love it too!
