Vessel Wednesday – Early bowl
Carson runs Vessel Wednesday each week, now with its own dedicated Flickr group!
My previous post for Vessel Wednesday was perhaps a bit lateral, so this time I have a real bowl.
This turned jacaranda wood bowl was a wedding present from one of my brothers and his wife.
It’s made by John Early from Sculptural Wood which operates in the KwaZulu Natal midlands.
This bowl is unbelievably thin and light. In fact, it’s so fine that one day, the South Easterly wind blew off the shelf and a big chunk broke off. Look carefully and you can see magic tape holding it all together. Sniff.

Now that is a beautiful diptych.
In fact at first I thought it was a triptych, with the herringbone parquetry floor being a separate thin photo on the left hand side.
What a bugger about the chip in the bowl. you can hardly tell unless you point out the tape. I have a much more tragic vessel breakage story! And nothing to do with weather, just my own stupidity 🙂
Saving that one up for later
