I know the rest of my month’s about to get swallowed by crazy deadlines, so I’ve been spending as much time as possible in my studio lately, doing lots of cutting for fun.
I cut this from scarlet vinyl, using my NT cutter (exacto knife).
Hm, this is an interesting art idea. I recently started doing some stenciling, and wonder if the process of making something like this is similar. Did you draw out your design first, and decide where the negative/postive space would be? Hope that’s not a silly question…
Of course it’s not a silly question! I’m pleased you asked.
I’m afraid I did go at this in a rather gung-ho way, aware, as I cut, that I might have confused positive and negative, but it did turn out ok (this time). I’ve had some really disappointing results where I’ve just been really dumb and cut the wrong places.
I usually draw in pencil on a piece of paper and then stick it onto my vinyl with sellotape and cut through both layers with my knife. If I’m being careful, I do some scribbles with my pencil to indicate which bits are positive and which are negative, but it actually does my head in! I find it better to make the decisions as I need them.
Hope that helps. Do let me know when your have some pics of your results up on your blog. cheers Heather
Hey, thanks, that really helps. Even if you did most of it in your head…better than me just staring at it as I was doing trying to figure it out! I’ll let you know when I get around to doing one of my own (if it’s any good). Love your other artwork by the way.
