Fist sized scum puffs
Fist sized scum puffs
Massive swells hit Cape Town over the weekend. The newspapers got a bit silly and suggested we stock up on candles and tinned food, but instead we went down to Sea Point to check it out. That’s not snow in the picture, it’s.. um… scum!
While Three Anchor Bay had elephantine swells marching in and crashing against the sea wall, the drama was curiously silent, muted by all the foam rolling in like a sea of meringue. After hitting the sea wall, the foam was blown inland, slapping us with fist sized puffs of scum. Lots more entertaining than it sounds!
My mom sent through much more beautiful and majestic pics (taken with a real camera, not a silly mobile) of the swell from the Kommetjie side of things. Thanks, Ma (and Dad, for modelling!).Normal blog service, banging on about design etc, to resume tomorrow.

Awesome! I remember seeing this once before in Sea Point, many years ago, and the scum was so creamy, like the top of a cappuccino. Really beautiful! It made me feel quite homesick to see these pics but thank you for sharing them – it was a lovely glimpse across the world… 🙂

Lovely action shots of exploding puffs of scum! Your mom is also quite good with a camera! Thanks for sharing these pictures, I agree with kendalee, it’s cool to see the little anomalies happening in people’s lives far, far away. The power of blogs!

Whoa! That’s so crazy. We get a sort of scum on the ocean in NJ, too, but I’ve never seen the likes of this!

Great pics. We had a similar experience in Hermanus! Check out my blog for my ‘storm” pics!

Fantastic pics! I posted a picture that appeared this morning in the newspaper – had I known you had such great ones I would just have posted a link!
orange you lucky!
Wow! I could just see holding the kids back… ’cause they would be all over jumping in that stuff. Looks gross and cool at the same time.

Impressive stuff! The big waves were supposed to hit us today, but according to my surfing son, they seem to have fizzled out!

That’s way too pretty to be called “scum”. On the island in the Pacific on which I grew up (okay, it was in the northeastern Pacific but still…), we called that sea foam.
It sounds much nicer and, besides, isn’t that the stuff from which Aphrodite appeared?
