Won’t you take me to…
I don’t often post family shots on this blog, but couldn’t resist these weekend shots of Paul and me and little niece Lilly at Monkey Town primate sanctuary. Here’s a little squirrel monkey called Trouble, trying to steal my sticky dot.
This is Paul and Lilly just waiting for the baby gibbon, Melissa, to get start tumbling madly around the enclosure again. And below is Melissa’s dad Coco, feeling just a little worn out by all the youthful exuberance.
I’m not a fan of zoos, and lord knows the South African zoos are nothing to boast about, but I loved Monkey Town, partly because the enclosures are so big, and humans walked through netted tunnels, so it’s more that we’re in the cages, not the primates.
And while talking about monkeys, here’s an illustration I did last year for FairLady magazine for a light-hearted piece about monkeys and typewriters.
orange you lucky!
Aaah… I guess he’s working on Hamlet.
Cute pictures:) I have bad feelings towards zoos, but the open space situation sound nice…:)

Wow, I love this post! And I love monkeys too… it reminds me of my summer in Panama, where we used to be the lucky friends of the sweetest dog and her “son” Edward the monkey who accompanied us on our journeys to the beach 😉 See here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/moonpics/2836199006/in/set-72157607159107411/
I dearly miss both of them!

wow, La Cometa Lab! those photos are great! what a wonderful pair of friends. i love that edward clung on while she was doing her business even!
i feel the same about zoos but at least these days they have breeding programs to reverse some of the damage humans have done. monkey town looks fun though – love the cage setup. 🙂

what a funny experience!… i don’t like zoos either but sometimes it can be ok. We have a big park here near Paris called Thoiry where you can go by car, leave it outside the park and walk through the animals, some are kept apart (obviously they won’t let you walk next to the lions….) and some walk around just like that and you can easily see them and take pictures, it’s better than a zoo even if it’s nothing compared to real wildlife, of course!
love your handbag by the way! 🙂
have a nice day heather!

I love Monkey Town! Bordeaux and I went a few years back, and completely fell in love with the two sad-faced gibbons– one of them even grasped Bordeaux’s finger, which is probably against the rules, but was very sweet. -X

Oh thanks for those great pics, La Cometa Lab – loved seeing them. Looks like Edward was great for photo ops.
Xander, those sad faced gibbons are the ones that have the naughty little baby now, and they’re full of beans. Such a great sight. Last time we were there, one of the keepers introduced us to a black Spider Monkey who laid his big long hand on my forearm in the most moving and gentle gesture, which I’ll never forget. It’s a special place.
