Making Friday – 24 April
Ok, so it was a Making Saturday, not a Making Friday, but I think the exoticness of my location will excuse the shift in days. I did my making this week at a place I’ve often read about: the Brooklyn studio of Lena Corwin! She runs monthly workshops in her pretty studio, and so I took full advantage, and look at what I made:
Ok, so it’s not much to show for four hours of work, but this was an embroidery workshop, so it was about process, not about product. Cal Patch of HodgePodge Farm taught us 12 basic embroidery stitches, as well as a couple of applique techniques.
Look at the kinds of things Cal can embroider:
Inspiring stuff! Also inspiring was Lena’s lovely collection of vintage ceramics, and the fact that the leaves on the studio water jug matched almost exactly the colours of the embroidery threads I’d picked up at Purl Soho the day before.
It’s a cold, rainy day in New York, and my knees are still sore (both knees now). I think I feel an embroidery coming on…

Amazing! I can’t sew a stitch to save my life, yet looking at these pictures I’m seized with the strongest urge to embroider! Mmmmmmm.

You lucky girl, so great to be able to go to one of those classes!! I cannot wait to see what you are going to do in New York, so nice to let us glance over your shoulder on this trip!

I know, I am very lucky. I feel like parts of the internet have come alive all of a sudden! Loving it all. Thanks for your lovely comment.

Wish I was there. I’m a huge fan of the Purl Bee (purl soho’s blog) and Lena (“Printing by hand”).Enjoy!

you should bind your gorgeous template of stitches with a cover, for the use of subsequent ages
my partner’s grandmother had a little book of stitches that she created at college whilst studying “home making” many years ago
a textbook of her stitches
