Springtime
27 Apr 2010
It’s been a bit cold and rainy the last few days, but up until now, New York’s weather has been beautiful. Seasons in South Africa are not quite as firmly demarcated as they are in the Northern hemisphere, so this has been my first “real” springtime, with blossoms, tulips, crocuses and more.
Well, depending where you are, the seasons are a bit different. I spent many years in the sub-tropical East side, where it’s stinking, dripping hot in summer and pleasantly warm in winter. Spring and autumn don’t really happen at all over there. In Cape Town, there’s a mediterranean climate, with cold, wet winters, punctuated by glorious crisply blue days, and the summers are perfect beach weather, with frequent winds to cool things down. Spring and autumn do happen a bit, but they’re a bit of a merge with the other seasons rather than being very distinct.
Spring looks surprisingly like it does here in the Netherlands – I suppose it’s that Dutch connection again. Don’t you just love it when the streets are covered in tiny, ice pink petals? it’s like confetti…
It isn’t just a Northern Hemisphere vs. Southern Hemisphere difference, you are much farther North in NYC than you are South in South Africa! Cape Town is at a latitude closer to the equator than Los Angeles! The spring is lovely there though – I hope your knees cooperate enough for you to enjoy it!
I wanted to whip out my camera to take pictures, but the rain decided to blow off the beautiful new blooms in Boston *sob*
I’m glad you managed to get a whole lot of lovely pictures!
🙂
Blown away!!!!!!!! I feel asthough I’m there. I love the way you’re able to capture moods and places so well, it’s another talent of yours 🙂 Hope you’re having the time of your life xx
fun, isn’t it? Autumn is the best, even beats spring. And be glad you’re out of there by the time the northern-hemisphere stinking heat arrives. Have you experienced some Christmas-time snow? Bliss! But then again, always wish it was gone by Jan 5.

Amazing wisteria. Is that at your apartment?

Isn’t it lovely? No, our apartment is not quite as typically NYC. This one’s further north from us, up in Greenwich Village. xx
