Russian Fairy Tales
Medina has had this beautifully illustrated book in the studio all week. The illustrator is Henry R Martin, and I love the effect to which he puts just three colours, along with the white space of the page, and also the way he frames his illustrations. Most inspiring, Mr Martin!

Great illustrations. Does it have the tale of katiecrackernuts? I was told it was Russian in origin but have read different elsewhere. It’s been a hard one to lock down to a point of origin.

I want this book badly! Love the illustrations and love Russian fairy tales. Just got a book full of them to read to the girls… but these illustrations are way way better.

I love these too. Also, hunting around for more about this illustrator on the net, it seems he mostly did quite jokey stuff, but was clearly a lot more talented than that. Hope you find a copy for yourself and the girls. xx

How funny that I stumbled across your blog today and found this post! I’m the design director for Peter Pauper Press, and was interested to see this book. The company is family owned and has been in business since 1928. They are in their third generation now! Many of the older books have beautiful illustrations like these, and were printed in Mt. Vernon, NY. The original presses were donated to a local university. Now, of course, everything we print is done overseas, but I do like looking at these older books!
