More pattern hunting
A Saturday morning spent prowling around the Sea Point CAFDA bagged me another beautiful book cover for my growing book cover collection…
… and two others which, although not in the genre of my collection, couldn’t be resisted. I like it that they’re both ocean-related, and fit so well together stylistically.
I’m often disappointed when books with beautiful covers don’t have illustrations that are in line with the cover artwork, but The Sunken City (published 1959) doesn’t disappoint. The illustrations by Canadian illustrator, Theo Dimson, are quite wonderful, and are given heaps of space on the pages too.
I like that scratchy, brushy, somewhat querulous mark he makes, and wonder what he used to make his illustrations. Read more about Theo Dimson here, and see some of his more recent work here.

OOh I do love these, and would have snapped them up myself if I had been there! If I didn’t live half way across the world from you I’d enjoy comparing book collections. Thank you for sharing your finds.

Came over to your blog (via Flickr!) to find out more about that illustrator!
His soldiers remind me of this gorgeous screen print by Tibor Reich:

Oh the illustrations – these are lovely ones. Everytime I go to a CAFDA I leave with a box full of books.
