At FoodWineDesign
I had a crazy week up in Joburg, working on the FoodWineDesign Fair, and returned just in time to take the day off for my birthday. In a nutshell, that’s a list of excuses for having neglected my poor, news-hungry blog of late. But, of course, I’ve been instagramming up a storm, so here’s an instagram summary of things I saw and did whilst in Jozi last week:
The FoodWineDesign Fair is a very well-curated, high-end selection of (you guessed it) food, wine and design from all over South Africa (with Cape Town dominating the Design section of the show).
The fair takes place on the top parking deck of Hyde Park Corner shopping centre, which is transformed from a bleak parking lot, with the help of truckloads of mulch and potted plants, into a magical tented village, complete with a somewhat unseasonal maypole in the village. Really, it’s a great show, well worth the R80 entrance fee.
The Skinny laMinx stand was right at the entrance, and very kindly furnished with beautiful mid-century pieces from MØDERNIST in Parkhurst. Our stand kept great company too, as it was just opposite fellow Bree Street peeps, Missibaba, and next door to other lovely people like Frieda Lühl and Mingo Lamberti (pics below).
Sales were good, and we got some really great publicity – including a front-page pic & and article in the Mail & Guardian!
I must say though, after four days of selling and talking, I was completely exhausted and peopled-out, so after packing up my stand, I went to the Joburg Zoo and had a great time drawing birds and monkeys.
In general, I had such a great time in Jozi, where enterprises are bold, coffee is strong, people are friendly, and drivers stick to the rules of the road. I’m looking forward to returning soon.

Can I be as bold as to say I can’t wait to see what happens with those bird illlustrations? Birds are my weakness!

Heh. It was mostly monkeys I was drawing in the end. Do you like monkeys too?
