First Thursdays May – Half Square launch
After all my blogging about the process, I’m so excited to finally reveal what I’ve been doing fiddling around with ceramic tiles in collaboration with Spier Architectural Arts:
At the First Thursdays event tonight, there’s a special preview of this World Design Capital project called Half Square (project #WDC382).
Half Square is launching at a couple of venues around the city, including the Skinny laMinx shop window at 201 Bree Street, where you’ll be able to see this 2.1 x 1.4m ceramic tile panel in 12 shades of green that I’ve been keeping under wraps. Ta da!
I’m looking forward to seeing the other commissioned panels, which have been made by knitwear designer Laduma Ngxokolo, and fine artists Doreen Southwood and Swain Hoogervorst, which will be on display at Robert Sherwood design and at the AVA gallery.
Each of the Half Square Artist Panels is for sale, and the purpose of this preview is to showcase the creative possibility of the Half Square tile, as they’ll soon be available for purchase so that you can make up your own amazing design. For now though, Half Square will be open for large-scale commissions.
Read more about my process in this design journey with Spier Architectural Arts in two of my previous blog posts, here and here.

This is so beautiful. This piece reminds me of spring here in Iowa (USA), great murals from our WPA era—wonderful! It must have been so much fun to “paint” with tiles. Bravo!

Wow, so great to see it in its entirety! Dare I say, that would made a lovely quilt pattern.

When will the tiles be for sale? I have a project I would like to start soon!

Hi Meret
Thanks for getting in touch.
This project was way back in 2014, and I don’t think that the idea was for them to be available as a retail option. If you like, contact Yellowwoods Arts at http://www.yellowwoodsart.co.za/ to find out if they do have them to sell.
All the best,
Heather

This is stunning, I am transfixed. It sounds like a one off, highly artisanal experience, kudos!
It’s January 2020, I am late to this story and have just clicked through to the links at Spiers Architectural Arts (domain is no longer maintained, very odd, no forwarding!) and ditto for Yellow Woods Arts (were these companies hacked and are being held for ransom? Such a strange phenomenon that both are kind of kaput). In any event, sending you warm regards from NYC in the US.

Gorgeous indeed! Has this now made it to be available for purchase from enthusiastic fans?:)

Hi Iona
Thanks for the enthusiastic fan response, and for the good question. I actually have no idea what happened to this piece! I made it way back in 2014 and will have to do some digging to find out more.
If you do want to find out if it is available, or if a commission is possible, would you email the ceramicist Karen Kotze at karen.wovenceramics@gmail.com
All the best,
Heather
