Best Things #03
Since starting to send weekly newsletters (sign up here, if you haven’t yet), I’ve become a big fan of this way of getting info and staying in touch, and have been signing up for newsletters all over the place. I thought that today’s Best Things post could include some of the things I’ve come across via these channels.
1 Always happy to see a super-energetic mailer from Abigail Ahern, because she’s brilliant and hilarious. Who can resist a blog post called How to Crawl Out of your Beige Haze Coma? I’m also rather delighted to see that her book Colour is out. Read a review.
2. Did you take me for someone who signs up for newsletters from weightlifters? Well, after reading an article about IF on James Clear’s site a week ago, that’s exactly what I did, and so far I’ve been rewarded with a worthwhile article noting the distinction between Systems and Goals. We’ll see how it goes.
3. I’ve been subscribed to Maria Popover’s Brainpickings newsletter for quite some time now, which is a very rich weekly roundup of all manner of interesting books, articles and podcasts. It’s a bit of a daunting one, as it’s very long read, but definitely worth subscribing to, even if you only get to read it occasionally. As a result of reading Brainpickings, I getting the message that keeping a journal of everyday events is a worthwhile practise, and this article in NY Mag is what got me to start putting pen to paper on a daily basis.
4. If you’re a pattern designer, the Pattern Observer newsletter is a great way to make sure you keep up with industry news and read great interviews. Michelle Fifis – the brains behind the site – also runs great business and design development courses, and will let you know which are coming up. I loved this interview with Michelle on Design*Sponge.
Just to finish up, I thought I’d let you know that Abby Glassenberg’s ebook on the topic of newsletters really changed a lot of my thinking about marketing, and newsletters in particular. If you’re in business, you might like to take a look too.
Also, I send out a fascinating weekly newsletter on a Wednesday, and you can sign up for that right here (you’ll get a fab reward voucher if you do!)

These are terrific! I’m a huge fan of subscribing to everyone’s newsletter and when I get a really good one (like yours!) I’m so excited! Thank you for recommending my ebook!

Thank you for the Pattern Observer newsletter reference! I knew the website but never thought of subscribing. 🙂
I’ve been subscribed to James Clear’s newsletter for months, and really enjoy it, even occasionally archive some of his emails in Evernote for later reference. Plus, I LOVE how scrupulous he is about quoting his sources, even who inspired him to talk about something after a simple conversation.

I’m so glad to hear someone else I know is subscribed to it. I feel a little odd about it, as I’m not really a big fan of self help-ish stuff, but I do like him, and find his articles very well considered. And yes, impressed with scrupulous referencing, for sure.
Have a great weekend,
Heather xx
