Making Friday: Baskets and suns
My friend Binky Newman at Design Afrika is having a special event at her Woodstock studio this weekend, AFRICA ADORNED. You have to go, to see baskets just in from Lesoto, Uganda, Burkina Faso and Ghana, as well as Guidemore Chigama’s eclectic jewellery and a selection of ceramics by Clementina van der Walt.
Dates: Friday 2 to Saturday 3 December, 10am to 5 pm.
Address: 42 Hares Avenue, Woodstock, Cape Town.
After my visit to Binky, I went to my studio for Making Friday, and all I made for the rest of the days were sun shapes. It was only at the end of the day that I realised two things:
- It was those baskets that made me do it
- I’ve been looking at my book about Alexander Girard lately, who was heavily influenced by folk art, and made a lot of suns.
And the conclusion that must be drawn from this scientific equation is the following: Folk art and suns are best friends.
