Benard Nkanjo
I took a break from a mammoth packaging and posting session (the result of my post-Design*Sponge sales spike) and set up an extremely makeshift infinity screen made of postage tubes and cereal boxes in order to photograph my prized new possession: this beautiful bird sculpture by Zimbabwian artist, Benard Nkanjo.
Benard is one of a number of Zimbabwean stone sculptors represented by the Park Bench Gallery in Kloof Street, Cape Town. You can see work by other Zimbabwean artists represented by this gallery here.
Most of the sculpture is pretty hefty, both in size and price, but these birds, priced between R100 and R200 (about $20) are very affordable.
I may just have to get a whole flock.
PS: Zimbabwe is a country in crisis. This site collects together articles about the situation there, if you’re interested.

This is wonderful. Exquisite, even. I am feeling covetous.

Beautiful! I have a good friend from Zimbabwe (living in Dublin now) who I think will be pleased to see a story about a fantastic sculptor rather than the usual news… It’s a lovely piece Heather and worthy of starting a collection for sure! Your pictures turned out great too.
