    How to make EcoBricks

    13 Feb 2018

The drought and hardcore water restrictions have made me super thrifty about everything. I’ve been recycling for years, but it’s only when I found out about EcoBricks (thanks to kind readers responding to this post) that my eyes really opened to how much waste I generate.

Ecobricks are plastic bottles stuffed with non-recyclables, turned into building blocks that get stacked together and held in place with mortar to create good, solid, insulating built walls.

Want to start making EcoBricks too? Find out how on the EcoBricks website , or follow my  How To instructions below:

Isn’t it amazing that this  great solution for keeping all my sweet wrappers, cling film, salad packs, foil wraps out of the landfill can result in something properly useful? Look at the walls behind Jane, the woman in the image below who built this house in the Philippines. They’re all made of EcoBricks! Click the image to watch a video about it.

Go to ecobricks.org to find out if there’s an EcoBrick dropoff in your town, and if you’re in Cape Town, wanting to get involved, look up the EcoBrick Exchange website or Facebook page.

PS: You can also drop your Ecobricks off at the Skinny laMinx shop at 201 Bree Street, because my niece Izzy has a competition at school to see who can make the most, and I want her to win!

        Hi Jeanette
Apologies for the slow reply. There’s different opinions on this, but I have heard that 1 litre bottles are best, although others say that any bottle is useable.
        Happy Eco-bricking!

Can I add aluminium foil? I cannot seem to find a definitive answer on this. Thanks.
