20 Days of HappyThanks #8: Hope on Hopkins

    23 Nov 2018

This post is the eighth in a series of 10 instagram-based giveaways devised to promote our fellow business owners, as well as to give us a chance to say THANK YOU to all the people who support Skinny laMinx on social media all year long.

A huge thank you to Hope on Hopkins for their fabulous experience-based prize (see what I mean at the end).

I was very happy when Leigh Lisk and Lucy Beard moved back to South Africa from London, quitting their tax lawyer jobs to start their own distillery, as I find it’s quite nice to have friends with a distillery. In fact, if you’ve ever been to one of our launches or events, you most likely drank Gin from Hope on Hopkins.

While it’s become hard not to trip over a gin maker in Cape Town, Leigh and Lucy’s Hope on Hopkins were way ahead of the curve, and were, in fact, the first distillery to launch in Cape Town. Unlike many, they make their gin from scratch in the distillery where they live and work, so they can tell you exactly where the carefully-sourced quality ingredients come from. Another distinguishing feature is that they are one of the few distilleries in the world using barley as the base for their spirit, which they cook, ferment over several days and then triple-distill to make the base neutral spirit for their London Dry and Salt River Gins. They then go on to distill a fourth time, allowing the alcohol vapours to infuse through select botanicals.

Even if you don’t win this prize, I’d highly recommend booking one of their Martini Masterclasses or gin tastings, to learn the subtleties of taste, aroma and manufacture that make the activity of choosing a gin so much more interesting.

Note that the Tasting Room is open on Saturday afternoons between 12 and 6pm. Regrettably no under 18s will be admitted.

    • Please note: The winner will have to be capable of attending Hope on Hopkins, so would preferably be in Cape Town, or about to travel to Cape Town.
