Making Friday: From the studio walls
As you know, my Making Friday studio practice is all about making, making, making, with no real plan or expectation or need in mind. I find it so important to simply generate work that’s liberated from all the necessary work restrictions of cost and production possibility etc that product development requires. Here’s some of the stuff I do on Making Friday.
But sadly, a lot of what I make ends up languishing in drawers and on studio walls, occasionally making it onto my dedicated @makingfriday account on Instagram, but often never really finding a home.
So when Kat Pichulik of jewellery and fashion brand Pichulik and I started talking about a fabric collaboration for her Spring/Summer 2020 launch, and she started showing me what she had on her moodboard, I had so much on my studio walls that was just ripe for use, it was kind of crazy.
To show you what I mean, I put together an image series, pairing moodboard images sent by Kat on the left, with the collages, cutouts and prints on my studio walls that I sent back to her as we fell into a marvellous experience of creative synergy.
You know that feeling when you’re a kid and you meet someone on the playground and instantly fall into perfect synch? That’s what it was like, as Kat and I sent WhatsApps and emails back and forth as we felt out the territory, looking for a textile design that would work in her new fashion and jewellery collection.
Her inspiration for PLENTY was the furniture and colours of mid-century Brazilian furniture, art and design seen in the works of Sergio Rodrigues, Roberto Burle Marx and Genaro de Carvalho as well as the music of the Tropicalia movement in Brazil at the same time.
And that’s where I must stop! PLENTY will be launched in our shop on 26 October, which is when you’ll see the finished product of this marvellous opportunity to give some of those things on my studio walls a moment in the spotlight.
