Making Friday: 11 March 2011
I had a peculiarly unsettling Making Friday today, listening to the news of the quake in Japan, and reading scared tweets from people in Tokyo as I cut and pinned and sewed. Two electricity cuts left me a bit high and dry, and a string of visitors disrupted things too. Nonetheless, I got to the end of the day having done what I wanted to: I invented a bag!
Well, it’s hardly an invention – just another lined bag with a zip, but I was pretty pleased to have thought it out without a pattern, going from sketch to near-finished product in a matter of hours. My sewing machine is not really up to this kind of job, and so the stitching is pretty hack-handed, but I’m happy to say that I reckon I’m getting a lot better at sewing.

I love the shape of this bag! Is the fabric canvas? I want to make one now!

So pleased you like it, despite my wonky sewing (really must get a decent, strong machine some time). I made the bag from a heavy calico, and the red is a brushed cotton, while the lining is screenprinted on a light calico. Perhaps I should make another bag, and work up a pattern for it, because it is actually quite a nice shape. Thanks for the encouragement in my sewing projects.

what a lovely bag! it looks really comfortable and soft…which is my pre-requisite for larger bags that i carry.
so happy to have stumbled onto your blog!

It looks great! I love the contrasting fabric inside. There’s something so satisfying about making bags, I think. Maybe it’s because they’re so useful but look great too.

Can we expect to see these in your shop soon? I love it! x

Hmm, I’ll need to work a bit harder on my pattern making and sewing skills, but yes, I do have plans for bags coming up soon. x
