Weaving lingo
Weaving lingo
A comment from Anna Betts on my previous weaving post caused the holes in my leaky brain to temporarily plug, allowing me to recall the fact that I already have a mini loom, and it’s a lot more sophisticated than the one I’d been using. A rummage in a box at the top of the cupboard resulted in lots of peering at instructions, batting off cats while flailing about with strands of yarn, and learning new words like “heddle” (the thingy that goes up and down, making weaving faster), the difference between warps and wefts (duh), and what a “shed” is (the space you pass the shuttle through).
And as if my weaving was not a sufficiently effective procrastination device, I took the time to make this vaguely vintage-looking diagram showing off my new grasp of weaving lingo:
Now, I must just find out what that thingy at the top is called, and then the cool weaving kids will let me hang out with them.

Heather yours looks amazing! Much better colours than my attempt. Aren’t the proper words for the parts great? I must have another go with mine I feel all inspired! In theory I suppose you could make a scarf on these things couldn’t you? I’ll get back to you next year with the results…

could it be a “yarn beam” ?

Gosh, this brings back memories. Hope you had a fab break and may this be a happy new year.

I think it is called a beam. (warp beam)
Neat-o weaving!

Thanks Masha and Michelle. I think the “beam” bit will let me slip in unnoticed with the weaving crowd!

I get to hang out with the coolest weaving kid ever and I don’t even weave! :):) My friend Ursula would know the lingo.
I recently spotted a vintage table top weaver at our local book store. Now I wish that I would have bought it! It was called “The Easy Weaver” which was quite catchy.
orange you lucky!
Procrastination is where it’s at!
Knowing nothing about weaving (it all is a mystery thingie to me), I say this looks fantastic!
Jesse
Nice loom! Thanks for sharing the lingo. I’ve only ever used a shoebox with grooves cut into it, and my mom’s wide (hair) comb to get everything straight. No wonder I thought the first loom was fancy 😉 This is a whole ‘nother level

Yes, to agree with the other two comments, the thing on the top is called a beam. Lookin’ good!
best verification word ever: slabablo.

Check out Time to Weave from Interweave Press. Lots of little weaving stuff. Also, to get in with the cool weaving kids, the “top” in your photo would usually be the bottom, the part close to you – you would pass the shuttle through and beat it down towards yourself. But maybe you know that, and it totally doesn’t matter on a frame loom like that. Weaving is really so so so fun!
Got here from a gift guide on Etsy, saw your teatowels (they’re great!), and love the Obama fabric you feature, already emailed Tracy about it.
