Peynet inspiration
Peynet inspiration
I’m working on some illustrations for a wedding guide, and for inspiration, I’m using the images in these books by 1940s popular illustrator Raymond Peynet .
Ever since I studied French at school, using the a la Page series, I’ve been crazy about this style of illustration, so I’m pleased to get a chance to try it out myself. Once the guide is published, I’ll show you what I came up with. In the meantime, here are some of my favourites from Peynet:
I discovered there’s an online shop selling Peynet memorabilia and books, but I have to say that the things I see there don’t capture the simple charm of these books.

Wow, I love the intricate composition but simple forms of the last print in the forest. I can only imagine what a vision of Table Mountain would look like in that style. -X

Reminds me a little like Edward Gorey, but not sinister or dark… very sweet, in fact. I like the stark b&w illustration and long lines. I’m interested to see his influence on your work!

The images remind me a LOT of Craig Thompson’s work. Wonderful graphic narratives.

They remind me of the characters in Madeleine!

I’ve missed about three weeks of visual candy and your blog, as usual – has more than made up for it:)

I am really pleased to see this. I have a vintage scarf which I love and I now realise that it must be the decoraterd with the illustrations of Raymond Peynet!
