The keys ride again
So, remember the keys that Beryl gave me? Well, I still haven’t got around to using them in a design, but my studiomate Medina Morphet has been eyeing them for a while now. Outside of her work as a painter, Medina teaches art to little ones, and this is how she got the kids to put the keys to use:
First, they rolled out clay on boards.
Then they pressed keys into the clay, leaving clean key impressions.
After rolling the surface with ink and pressing paper onto the surface, this is what came out on the other side.
What’s next for those keys…?

Great idea! I wonder what pressing them into styrofoam would do? (It's supposed to be a good printing material for kids.)

Multi-functional, re-purposed vintage keys!

That is one mono-printing process I never even thought of! The result is gorgeous!
orange you lucky!
Very cool… that sounds like a project I could do with my girls… must get some clay next time.

Wow! I can't believe I didn't come up with that! I have some really old keys that belonged to my great grandfather. He had some rental properties (way back then!) and my grandmother found the keys a few years back and let me keep them. I was enamored with them but couldn't figure out what to do with them. The printing idea is PERFECT. Thanks so much for this!

That technique is excellent, & the print looks lovely too! I was wondering, do you keep the keys in when printing, or take them out of the clay before printing? (:

i also have a few questions, being an art teacher who loves printmaking! what kind of ink did you use? did you just wash it off after you made the print or did you work the ink back into the clay before rolling it out again? and to reiterate the other question, did you take the keys out before inking the clay? the result looks great! : D thanks!

So pleased you enjoyed this! Medina's one hot-stuff art teacher! I haven't seen her complete the process, but i understand that after pressing the keys into the clay, she carefully removes them, then rolls the surface with ink and a roller, before pressing paper onto the inked clay.Happy printing!
