Mug and Fiep
Mug and Fiep
I had good finds at Milnerton Market recently, including this Staffordshire Potteries mug, and piles of melamine plates and bowls adorned with adorable illustrations by Dutch illustrator Fiep Westendorp .
Fiep Westendorp was, by the way, a lady. I didn’t realise this until I visited her website, where I also discovered that her real name was Sophia Maria Westendorp, and Fiep was just a nickname.
From 1945, Fiep Westendorp’s illustrations started appearing in magazines and in advertising, and at the end of the 50s, her books started hitting the shelves. She became famous for her cat characters, Pim and Pom, and also for the characters on these plates, who are called Jip en Janneke.
The adventures and escapades of these adorable little mites fill the pages of the Jip en Janneke series, written by Annie MG Schmidt.
I love the way their little shoulders are hunched up in effort, and the amazing amount of expression she gets from her characters, largely through body language, as the faces are pretty low on detail.
Fiep Westendorp, I’m a fan, and I’ve got far too many of your melamine plates to prove it!
Update: Thanks to Mikodesign for letting me know about all the cool Jip en Janneke things (puzzles, stamps, onesies, etc) available at Dutch store HEMA. So cute!

I’m a huge fan! How did you get so many awesome pieces… I’ve never even seen one of these:( That’s jealousy talking:)
Thanks for the brief educational write up on Fiep.
I did not know it was only a nick name.

These are great illustrations. It’s funny, they used to creep me out something horrible when I was a kid, but now I really like them. I think it was the lack of facial features that I didn’t like.

Since I am Dutch as well, I grew up with Jip and Janneke, so are my Thai daughters who also LOVE J&J. And I named my daughters J&J; Juliet and Jasmine. The stories are so much fun!!

I adore melamine, but I have never seen these, nor the charming little characters with their shoulders held high… totally spot on.

This is such a coincidence … just this morning i had coffee with some friends here in Kuala Lumpur and I showed them all my Fiep Westendorp books … it’s a small collection and I bragged about her being the best children’s illustrator in the world and it was much fun for me to introduce her to my international friends … the melamine plates are gorgeous, probably from the HEMA? xx irene

I totally agree with you on the Jip and Janneke. I am a South African living in the Netherlands, we send Jip and Janneke home for the nephews all the time – you should see the galoshes…

Hehe, Jip & Janneke, all dutch readers speak up now! They're complete icons to us, it's almost impossible not to know Jip & Janneke here. I think if you'd ask, there would be more people not knowing our prime minister than not knowing Jip & Janneke… 😉

Damn that is a good find. I’ll have to jump on my scooter next weekend…
