Gluten Morgen! A collaboration with Jason Bakery
When we opened our shop in 2011, Bree Street was not exactly the beating heart of the Cape Town scene, although it was a great place for car upholstery cleaning and spark plugs. Actually, the only real reason I signed the store lease was that my favourite coffee shop was half a block away.
Eight years later, and Jason Bakery remains my coffee stop of choice in the ‘hood (not least because they continue to choose to upholster their seats in Skinny fabric!), so working with brother-and-sister team, Jason and Brigitte Lilley on their brand new breadbags has been an absolute milestone.
Here’s what Jason and Brigittte have to say about our collaboration:
Jason x Skinny laMinx
We’ve been wanting to make breadbags for ages, so people could transport a loaf easily and keep it fresh too. We’re trying to generate less waste, so we wanted something both functional and long lasting. Little did we know, it would turn into such a fun product!
While the Skinny team researched the best options in breadbag design, Heather adapted her Orla print, turning it into an ear of wheat, and then her husband Paul and Jason put their heads together to come up with baking-themed wordplay, which is when things got out of hand… fast!
Traditional bread bags combine two tea towels – one cotton and one linen, and this combination of fabrics keeps the crust crisp and the crumb soft for much longer than would happen in a paper bag (or even in a cotton bag).
So the bags are not just for carrying your bread home, zero-waste style, they’re also brilliant for storing a loaf and keeping it fresh.
Also, they really do put the fun into functional 🙂
xx Jason & Brigitte
