    Making Friday: #myapartmentsafari Challenge

    14 Apr 2020

During those long Lockdown days we all spent at home, I kept myself busy by going on ‘safari’ in my apartment.

What does that mean? Well, I stalked around our home, drawing all the little animal figurines on booksheves and in nooks.

Take a look at how it all turned out in this blog post.

But going on safari at home doesn’t have to be all about animal-spotting, you know. In fact, I’ve done a couple of Apartment Safaris before.

The first was way back in 2007, where I drew all the mugs in our apartment …and turned them into our  bestselling When Everyone Came To Tea tea towel.

I did the same with teapots (once a tea towel, now a greeting card) and I even upended a Woolworths bag of salad leaves and drew those!

    Sound like fun?

Why don’t you try going on your very own Apartment Safari? Here’s how:

    The #MyApartmentSafari Challenge

    Step 1. Choose one thing

What do you have a lot of? Teacups? Chairs? A lifetime’s collection of beer coasters? A cupboard full of tinned beans?

Well, now’s your chance to get them out & to look at them properly, possibly for the very first time.

    Step 2 Pick a style

The great thing about sketching or photographing many examples in a specific category of object is that the whole event becomes more interesting than the quality of each object or sketch.

So even though some of my sketches were not that good, & sometimes I’ve had to try to get it right a few times, they become an interesting idea all together. A bit like this

In other words, choose one way of recording your objects, stick with it, & don’t be a perfectionist!

Here are some ideas of how to approach your Apartment Safari:

     Sketch each item
    OR
Photograph each item in the same specific location
    OR
Arrange the items in order, like size, or rainbow colours
    OR
Place each object in a strong light, then trace the shadows.

I can’t wait to see what you saw on your Safari! Tag your pics #myapartmentsafari on Instagram.
